Why Scroll Trellis vs Other Trellises

Why Scroll Trellis vs Other Trellises

Most trellises are generic frames meant for open garden beds. Scroll Trellis is built for the awkward vertical spaces they ignore - downspouts, deck posts, porch columns, and narrow walls. Instead of forcing one shape to work everywhere, we offer two purpose-built systems: one for hollow downspouts, and one for solid, drillable surfaces.

Scroll Trellis vs Typical Tube, Cage, and Decorative Trellises

Use this guide to see how our kits compare to typical tube, cage, and decorative trellises when you are working with tight spaces, posts, and downspouts.

Scroll Trellis – Downspout Kit

  • Best for: Hollow metal or vinyl downspouts
  • Mounting: Screws into the downspout, plus cable ties to prevent slipping
  • Base: Works over concrete, stone, or pavers—no soil needed
  • Profile: Slim design that hugs the downspout
  • Space: Ideal for narrow side yards and tight walkways
  • Specialization: Purpose-built specifically for downspouts

Typical Trellises

  • Best for: General garden beds and open spaces
  • Mounting: Ground stakes, wrap-around cages, or generic brackets
  • Base: Often need soil; less suited to pavers or concrete
  • Profile: Bulkier tubes or arched frames that stick out farther
  • Space: Not optimized for very tight walkways or narrow side yards
  • Specialization: Usually not designed for specific surfaces like downspouts or posts

Downspout Trellis Kit

Our Downspout Trellis Kit is engineered specifically for hollow metal or vinyl downspouts, especially where there is concrete, stone, or pavers at the base and no planting bed to anchor a typical trellis.

  • Fastens directly into the downspout with screws for a secure, aligned fit.
  • Uses stainless steel cable ties to help prevent slipping or shifting over time.
  • Sits close to the pipe so vines hide the downspout without crowding your walkway.

Typical tube and cage trellises can sometimes be wrapped around a pipe, but they usually stand several inches away, rely on soil for stability, and look more improvised than intentional.

Flat-Surface Mounted Trellis Kit

Our Flat-Surface Trellis Kit is designed for solid, drillable vertical surfaces such as deck posts, porch columns, fence posts, and exterior walls or siding (where drilling is acceptable).

  • Mounts flush to the surface for a clean, low-profile look.
  • Keeps plants tight to posts and walls with only a 2" offset for airflow, ideal for narrow side yards and small patios.
  • Helps you green up spaces where a freestanding trellis simply will not fit.

Typical decorative trellises are usually freestanding or fence-mounted. They are rarely sized or drilled specifically for posts and walls, so they either stick out too far or require awkward workarounds.
